Sense of Place is a new annual screening program of contemporary Australian video art, featuring the work of 8 artists unified by their investigation of cultural identity.
Sense of Place features the artists themselves as protagonists, characters or as self portraits. Using digital video as a means of not only recording, the artists have engaged with screen based media on many levels - exploring identity, historical positioning, reportage, cultural propriety and social paradigms. The exhibition examines what makes an Australian identity and how the physical landscape affects our social landscape and sense of place. What is a domestic landscape and how do Australian artists re ect their experiences and sensibilities through screen based mediums?
Sense of Place has been developed speci cally to be shown sequentially as eight exhibition periods in one year, taking viewers on an ongoing journey into the world of contemporary video art. The exhibition provides host galleries with the chance to display current video work in a highly accessible manner, offering valuable opportunities to develop accompanying education and public programs that appeal to viewers both new to, and already familiar, with screen media.
