Tara Marynowsky draws on collage and appropriation practices for her video works creating short, hallucinogenic excursions through cut and paste montages of found footage set to pop and film music soundtracks. The Deer Hunter [2004] took The Shadow’s easy listening rendering of the theme music from Michael Cimino’s 1978 war movie classic as the basis for a hectic romance and revenge narrative; men with guns fire comically at each other, adopt the heads of animals and assassinate Julie Andrews - all seen through a blizzard of floating black shapes suggesting swarming flies, bees or snow flakes. The Apple of My Eye [2006] used a similar cut and paste technique to build dense frames of fighter planes, the smiling head(s) of a ruddy-faced aviator and a female chorus. The end result is a short video of psychedelic intensity that’s both gently ridiculous and visually compelling. Using the same mirror imaging technique as her previous works, I Really Like What You’ve Done to Me [2007] lifted dance sequences from various films and re-edited the footage to a contemporary R&B soundtrack.
