Lauren Brincat was born 1980 in Sydney, Australia and is currently based in Paris.
Brincat is an artist who works across diverse media from video and performance to sculpture and installation. Influenced by her formal training in painting, the artist has noted that she considers herself to be ‘a painter despite not using a brush or paint’. The artist’s video works take the form of documented and often repetitive actions performed by the artist – riding, walking, eating, talking, rowing.
Acknowledging performance history, DADA, The Gutai group, rock’n’roll and the everyday as an inspiration, Brincat describes her works as pushing ‘physical and cognitive limits’. Previous artworks have seen the artist hold onto the edge of a diving platform above a swimming pool for as long as possible, play a drum kit raised metres above the ground or walk for a distance in a field of fog.
Brincat completed a Master of Visual Arts at the Sydney College of the Arts in 2006.
The artist was awarded the Australia Council for the Arts Emerging Artist Creative Australia Fellowship in 2012-2014 and the Helen Lempriere Travelling Art Scholarship in 2009. Brincat has exhibited widely across Australia, including the solo exhibitions It’s not the End of the World, Anna Schwartz Gallery, Melbourne 2013, Shoot From the Hip, Anna Schwartz Gallery, Sydney 2012, Shine on you crazy Diamond, Museum of Old and New Art, MONA FOMA Festival of Music and Art, Hobart; significant group exhibitions including The space between us: Anne Landa Award, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney 2013; Contemporary Australia: Women, Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane; TarraWarra Biennial 2012: Sonic Spheres, TarraWarra Museum of Art, Healesville, Victoria and Tinnitus: a symposium on art and rock’n'roll, Department of History of Art and Architecture, Harvard University 2012.
Over the last three years Brincat has lived and researched in Mexico City, Berlin, Tokyo, Paris, Stockhom, New York and is fortunate to be mentored by artist Johanna Billing in Europe and most recently Cuauhtemoc Medina in Mexico City.
Solo exhibitions include Shoot From The Hip at Anna Schwartz Gallery, Sydney, Shine on you crazy diamond, Slot 9, Melbourne (2010); and The whole kit and caboodle, Sherman Galleries, Sydney (2007). In 2010, Brincat staged a performance work at MONA FOMA, Hobart, and presented a major work, Drum riser, in the Melbourne CBD for the Next Wave Festival.
