John di Stefano

John Di Stefano is a videomaker/visual artist, writer and curator. He works across various mediums, including video, photography, and installation, and his recent work deals with issues of identity and diplacement by examining how concepts and perceptions of memory, space and time shape the articulation of subjectiveness.

He has exhibited his studio work extensively in America, Australia and Europe. He completed his BFA at Concordia University, before undertaking a MFA at the University of California in Los Angeles. He was awarded a PhD from Massey University, New Zealand. Recent curatorial projects include a media-based exhibition entitled Open Cities (Para/Site Art Space, Hong Kong and the Betty Rhymer Gallery, Chicago, 2001), a film/video series and gallery exhibition entitled Not On Any Map (Film Center/Betty Rhymer Gallery, Chicago, 1999), and extensive programming for the Los Angeles International Lesbian and Gay Film and Video Festival (1993-94).

His written works have appeared in various publications including a recent essay, "Peter Greenaway and the Failure of Cinema", in Peter Greenaway's Postmodern/Poststructuralist Cinema (Scarecrow Press, 2001). He is currently the Asia/Pacific Associate Editor of the electronic journal Site-Street. He is currently Postgraduate Coordinator at the National Art School in Sydney.
