Daniel Askill was born in Sydney in 1977. He completed a Bachelor of Visual Communications in 1997 at the University of Technology, Sydney.

Askill has created film, video installations, music videos and commercials. His work has been showcased internationally at venues including: Palais de Tokyo in Paris, Institute of Contemporary Arts in London and the Venice Biennale.

Askill says he began working with video:

"In my teens, just as digital video and non-linear editing was starting to surface. For me it was very much an extension of work I had been doing in music composition and sequencing."

Of his influences he lists:

"Andrei Tarkovsky, Steve Reich, David Lynch, Zen, Stanley Kubrick, Matthew Barney, Joseph Campbell, Bill Viola, John Cage, Michael Askill, 9/11, Minimalism, Michael Jackson, Buddhism."

Of his involvement with any organisations or artist-run initiatives that dealt with experimental media, he says:

"I am co-founder of a film / design / art collective called Collider."

Of his first and latest show he says:

"The first screening of an early piece We Have Decided Not to Die (2004) was at Artspace in Sydney. My work has been shown in various film festivals and exhibitions around the world including: PALAIS DE TOKYO Paris, INSTITUTE OF CONTEMPORARY ARTS London and VENICE BIENNALE."
