Angelica Mesiti

Angelica Mesiti is a video, performance and installation artist living and working in Sydney and Paris. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree with Honors and her Master of Fine Arts Degree from the College of Fine Arts at the University of NSW Sydney, Australia.

Angelica’s video works use cinematic conventions and performance languages as a means of responding to the particularities of a given location, its history, environment and communities. Past projects have focused on traditional music, dance performance, narrative, the ballad, and oral story telling traditions.

She was a founding member of the Sydney artist run Gallery Imperial Slacks, during which time she curated the two part video publication Serial 7’s. Solo projects include the C3West commission The Begin-Again through the MCA and Hurstville City Council (2011), and shows at 24Hr Art Darwin (2012), Gallery 9 Sydney (2010), and Broken Hill Regional Gallery (2009). Her work has been shown in Australia and overseas including: NEW12, Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne; Volume One MCA Collection, Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney (2012); Seventeenth International Art Festival Videobrasil, Sao Paolo, Brasil; London Australia Film Festival, The Barbican, London, UK; Videonale 13 Festival for Contemporary Video Art, Kunstmuseum Bonn, Germany; South by Southeast, Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, Tokyo, Japan; Selectively Revealed, Aram Art Gallery, Goyang, Seoul, South Korea (2011); Rencontres Internationales Paris, Berlin, Madrid, Centre Pompidou, Paris, Auditorium of the Ministerio de Cultura Madrid, Haus der Kulturen der Welt Berlin; No Soul For Sale, Tate Modern, London
(2010). 

Mesiti is also a member of the collaborative group The Kingpins, who have exhibited and performed in museums nationally and overseas including: The Musée d’Art Modern de la Ville de Paris (2007); Liverpool Biennial, UK; The Palais de Tokyo and Nuit Blanche-Paris (2006); Contemporary Art Centre, Vilnius, Lithuania, and Zacheta National Gallery of Art, Warsaw (2006); Transmodern Age Festival, Maryland, Baltimore, USA (2006); Gwangju Biennale, South Korea, Taipei Biennale, Taipei Fine Arts Museum, and SuperDeluxe, Tokyo (2004).

From 2001 to 2006, Mesiti was a casual lecturer in the Time Based Art department, College of Fine Arts, University of New South Wales.
