Two of Swords

Peter Callas
1981

three monitor installation, 20:00 mins, 1981
Roslyn Oxley Gallery Sydney, 1981

This piece was made in reaction to my involvement in the filming of the documentary Deadly Harvest in Thailand and the Shan States of Burma. The two person crew were in the ultimately unsuccessful pursuit of an interview with a notorious but elusive Golden Triangle drug lord.

On the first screen in this three monitor installation a figure in a dark overcoat leans over the the hood of a car shuffling though a series of pictures of various types of guns. The second screen contains the image of a shadowy figure behind a revolving fan onto which are projected images. The imagery on the third screen was shot in Wynyard Arcade in Sydney. It is of the output of a photographic processor (new to Sydney at that time), showing random snapshots (including the artist’s own rolls which consists of rephotographed family snapshots).
