The second stage of Australia's first and only national online directory for digital screen art was launched in Adelaide. screenarts, which has been developed by the Australian Network for Art and Technology (ANAT) in association with the Media Resource Centre and dLux media arts, previewed at the Mercury Cinema. screenarts provided a central point of access to the digital art which Australians were producing. The first stage of screenarts launched in December 1997.
This second stage of screenarts included links to conferences and fora in Australia, dealing with online screen based art, thus critically and culturally contextualising this fast expanding area of art practice in Australia. Screenarts utilised an online database (the Virtual Community Engine or VCE), developed by Adelaide based internet designers, Virtual Artists. This software enabled users to seek out their favourite artist or exhibition, organisations or practitioners.
