Kiru Umi No Yoni/Cutting Like the Ocean (Installation version)

Peter Callas
1983

installation incorporating video, 1983

Kaneko Art G1 Tokyo, (1983); Roslyn Oxley Gallery Sydney (1983); “Interface” University Gallery Adelaide (1984)
Installation on which the tape Kiru Umi No Yoni is based.

In this work a monitor supported on cut banana tree stems points upwards towards a slide projector. The projected image (showing the decapitated heads of two Taiwanese aboriginals) obscures the video image until the spectator intervenes to cast their shadow across the screen. The image revealed is of the artist in a variety of Japanese and western costumes moving around his lodgings (a 6 mat tatami room).
