A House Divided

Peter Callas
1988

installation incorporating videos and built structures, 1988
“Ars Electronica” Bruckner Haus, Linz, Austria (1988)

Produced for Ars Electronica in Linz, Austria, this installation consisted of a house-like structure with monitors for windows. Inside two monitors face each other on wooden pylons about six feet high. On one monitor is the image of a hypnotised man apparently floating in mid air. A doctor, or hypnotist, sits on his midrif - as in the manner of a hypnotist’s stage show. These figures, from the tape Night’s High Noon, represent the forces of dreaming and oppression in white Australian culture. On the second monitor is the contrived image of an aboriginal man with ceremonial adornments. He peers from behind a screen of atoms, representing the minerals and elements of the earth (particularly uranium).
The exterior of the house has constructed appendages which represent abstracted controls, as on a television set.
