We underestimate grief’s gifts awakening in us emotional and spiritual intelligence. I found the Yarra River in winter a place of deep comfort as its trees and banks seeped with sadness and soothed me in a way I did not think possible. My father’s death a year ago has been etched into every cell of my body. I felt it transpire into the moist air and trees and the river carried it. This video was exhibited in a small group exhibition, “droop” at ACU Gallery in September 2013. 4 graduating students collaborated to produce works for installation in the gallery window, facing Brunswick St, Fitzroy. The artists chose to explore grief as a theme that unified their current work. Performance, painting, soft sculpture and digital video film offered contrast and repeated tonal qualities and motifs of limbs of trees and arms and fingers threaded through the installation in unexpected ways.
