Four channel video installation, public performances, research paper
The Chrissy Diaries re-examines bastions of idealized femininity, which have been preserved by mass media and scrutinized by feminist discourse. This work focuses on four female stereotypes: The Princess, The Airhostess, The Cheerleader and The Bikini Model. Through the persona of a character called Chrissy, the artist participated in activities constituting each stereotype to explore the extent to which values perpetuated by mass media shape subjectivity at an experiential level. This methodology was also utilized to question the limitations of traditional feminist discourse, and generate alternative positions in the process. Resulting from this research, the four channel video installation depicts performative reconstructions of Chrissy’s endeavors, while the paper (Chapter 5 in Difference Reframed: Reflections on Art and Difference, ed. A. M. Kokoli, Cambridge Scholars Publishing, London, pp 107-135) considers the work in relationship to psychoanalysis and masquerade, feminist theorists Joan Rivière and Laura Mulvey, as well as artists such as Candice Breitz and Cindy Sherman.
