VIDEO FLASHES

When Sony invented the portable video recorder a new media tool hit the streets. In the hands of information freaks it became the tool of a new lifestyle and its politics. Pop music, Ecology action, radical psychotherapy and politics appeared on tape. The Black Panthers seized a recorder from a travelling academic in Algeria, Gay Lib had one donated, The IRA did self documentation, and community workers started to hustle institutions for the new tool where sound and picture playback was instantaneous. See yourself on TV. The TV studio carried on your back. In London a group of media freaks with portapaks invade the David Frost show in an attempt to break down the barriers to participation in Broadcast Media. Not only did they make their own message, they also wanted it seen.

GETTING IT SCENE

Working in and with their own communities, how were they to distribute their own programming? Video viewing theatres were used but reached a limited audience. Street corner playback was successful in reaching the neighbourhood. But it was when they entered the political arena of Cable TV and the Fight for the guarantee of rights for community access that the wider community was involved. These programmes below were made by videofreaks in the USA and England for Cable and Broadcast Access. It is "The Television of the Streets, not narcotic Television", not making the two sided liberal compromises of the mass media.

TURN OFF YOUR TV AND COME WATCH (YOURSELF) ON REAL LIFE VIDEO.
