This paper is in part based on an earlier paper, entitled Exploring the nature of electronic space through semiotic morphism, first presented at MelbourneDAC [2]. It expands the ideas explored in the earlier paper by providing a framework for exploring digital games in terms of ‘generative meaning systems’. These systems combine digital media language, computational semiotics, and artificial life / generative systems. This idea is explored through two recent art projects, Semiomorph and lifeSigns, that use gameplay to engage the player in the process of meaning construction.
