Replicunt

Alice Lang
2003

The video Replicunt documents a performance that took place in a room at the Moorooka Motel on the Ipswich highway in 2003. The performance involves a woman interacting in a sensual manner with sewn sculptures that are made from items usually associated with private space (doona covers and satin). A Motel room may be viewed as a replica of private space that temporarily serves a public function. Hence, notions of what is considered public and private space become complicated in this setting. The viewer is aware and curious of past activity that may have occurred in the room thus placing them in the position of the voyeur. This used/pre loved/shared private space leads to general associations of the motel room with dirty and devious behaviour. These associations are played upon with the distorted sleaze provided by the slow saxophone soundtrack that accompanies the video.
