The Empty Show

Emma Jay
2003

Art needs not Real Estate: In October 2003, visual and installation artists reclaim two abandoned buildings in central Newcastle. An earthquake hit the city in 1997 leaving many buildings abandoned, and the central business district looking like a ghost town. The Empty Show reclaimed the spaces, inviting artists to leave works in this temporary autonomous zone. The artists have between several hours and days to install work. The show is later open for viewing and left as a permanent display, unlike contemporary art galleries. The Empty Show is not a new concept, however an exhibition in Melbourne inspired similar actions around Australia. A DIY art show, have one in your neighbourhood
