Traverse

Robin Hely
2003

Traverse takes the form of a movie trailer and references a series of experiments done with a hidden spy camera in Melbourne CBD late last year. The trailer features a booming American accented voiceover, which outlines how the artist became involved with the subjects of his covert studies, and was then left to deal with the consequences when they discovered his true intentions. Traverse deals with the perverse trends found within contemporary reality television and film in an attempt to explore the boundaries of what is expectable within video art practice. Like his earlier work 'Sherrie', where he goes out on a blind date wearing a hidden camera, Hely places himself as the central all-knowing character within his organically formed narratives. Unsuspecting members of the public are seen as 'victims' in what is portrayed as a cruel game dressed up as video art.
