Zen Evening is based on a fragment (about 8 seconds) of an 18 minute work by Steve Law (Zen Paradox). Over a number of interations of the fragment, tiny equal length "genes" are removed and spliced in at randomly chosen points. The work is a classic transformational piece, becoming inherently rhythmic in the process. The rhythm is derived from the slow reorganization of the "gene" material. Interestingly, the listening experience is initially and progressively disturbing until half the "genes" have been replaced. From then on the work moves towards a stability and familiarity as the end of the replacement process nears. I mixed against the cycling pattern, some of the original music to lend a something of sympathetic context.
