Atanas Djonov was born in Plovdiv, Bulgaria in 1972 and moved to Sydney in 1996. He completed a video-production course at the College of Journalism and Mass Communication at Sofia University, Bulgaria. He completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) in 2002 and a PhD in 2011 from the College of Fine Arts, University of NSW.

Djonov’s practice incorporates a variety of different forms such as video installation art, film, sound, animation, photography, drawing and sculpture.

Djonov says about first start working with video:

“I found video immediate in terms of being able to preview instantly the written information and there is also something about the technology - the video camera and the video recorder itself - their look, technical gear, the electronic viewfinder etc.”

Of his involvement with any organisations or artist-run initiatives that dealt with experimental media, he says:

“I curated 3 screening events as part of Sydney Moving Image Coalition (SMIC) video works in 2005 at the Figtree theatre (UNSW).”

Of his first and latest show he says:

“I showed my first work in class at the College of Fine Arts and have been showing nationally and internationally since.”
