Introduction
In Japan there is little direct government funding to help develop and sustain an independent film and media arts industry. Corporate sponsorship has traditionally provided the support structures open to many artists working in this field. Recently however, many younger artists trained as creative directors and media artists have turned to Japan's ever expanding television industry for support. This collaboration between the artists and the hi-tech world of the Japanese television industry has resulted in a unique and often exciting mix of mass entertainment and art - a merging of high art and street level aesthetics. The two programs presented by Synya Katho, are a reflection of this present situation in Japan’s media arts. Synya Katho will also be discussing the present and future developments of the Department Image-Arts at the Kawasaki City Museum during the presentation of the new video: JAPAN program.
TV Avantgarde includes TV's TV by Tsunekazu Ishihara; The Museum of Accidents by Daizaburo Harada; Einstein by Toshio lwai. Synya Katho will speak on multi-information, interactive TV, and the 'para-reality' of media.
new video: Japan includes work by Seigen Kyu, Koichi Tabata, Hiroshi Yamakazi and the group Visual Brains.

TV's TV, Overall Direction: Tsunekazu Ishihara; Producer: Fuji Television Network + SEDIC (1987) 15:00 min (of 2 hours)
There are 100 small TV sets in the TV screen. Each has its own images. When a TV set is opened, the screen is extended to the real size and a short work is shown. When the work finishes the screen returns to the smaller sizes. This work reminds us of the "para-reality media".
Museum of Accidents, Director: Daizaburo Harada; Producer: NHK (Japanese Broadcasting Association), (1989) 15:00 min (of 46 min)
We see a multi-window design in this work. It seems to be a multi-finder/multi-window on a computer display or interactive TV. Of course this is a graphic representation and is made in a post-production studio. This program features Akira Asada, Paul Virillio and Ingo Gunther.
Einstein, Director: Shinji Fukuhara; C.G. Art Direction: Toshio Iwai; Producer: Fuji Television Network + ON THE ROAD, (1991), 10:00 min (of 45 min)
This is a 'science news show' program with pop-style.
Human & Forest (Hypermedia), Director: Kenji KIKUE; Producer: NHK (Japanese Broadcasting Association), (1990) 10:00 min
This is not a broadcasting program but a 'Hyper-rnedia' program that we can see the possibility of a new TV form in the future.
Mandara (HDTV Program), Director: Daizaburo Harada; Producer: NHK (Japanese Broadcasting Association), (1990) 10:00 min (of 26 min)
