Established by the One Extra Company in 1999, ReelDance began as a response to the growth in dance screen work being made in dance arenas overseas, and the need to foster a burgeoning field of practice in Australia. Under the guidance of founding director Erin Brannigan we held the first ever ReelDance Festival in 2000, a one-off screening in Sydney's Chinatown. Over the years we expanded our activities to include workshops, forums, distribution, exhibitions, commissioning, more screenings, and the ReelDance Festival became biennial with an every-growing tour schedule. The interest and support we have received from programmers both here and overseas highlights the profile we have developed as a point of contact for the form in Australia.
In 2008, after 8 years of being a project of One Extra and then the Performance Space, ReelDance Inc began operating on its own and in 2009 became one of the Australia Council for the Arts' emerging key organizations. In February 2009 we welcomed new director Tracie Mitchell, who brings her knowledge and enthusiam to ReelDance as we enter our tenth anniversary year.
